Foundational to Valley View Community Church are five core values that define the function of a biblical community. These are the values that the church is committed to teaching and that fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ are committed to practicing in order to make a difference in this world. WORSHIP
The word worship comes from the Old English word "worthship." It means to respect, revere, and admire the object esteemed. Worship is our response to God’s worth. When we worship God we declare his incomparable greatness. Worship is what God seeks from his people. In fact, worship is the only thing that the Bible says God seeks from us. In John 4:23-24 Jesus said,
In a biblical community worship is a priority. Spirit-directed worship recognizes that the Holy Spirit is the one who focuses our attention on God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ. A regular encounter with God is essential for the church to fulfill it’s mission. Encountering God gives fresh perspective to life and reminds us of what is of primary importance. Worship invites God to do his work in us and through us. THE WORD
Acts 2:42 tells us that the members of the first biblical community devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching. Biblical community is built upon obedience to the teaching of the apostles. A biblical community highly values the understanding and application of the Word of God. In Matthew 4:4 Jesus said that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Believers need a steady diet of the Scriptures.Spending time alone in the Word of God and processing biblical truth with others are essential disciplines for those who desire to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is our resident teacher and enables all believers to discover truth from the Bible for themselves. Yet God has also provided gifted teachers who build up the church by communicating the Word of God clearly, accurately, and practically. When the Word of God is applied in our lives it produces a love for God and one another that testifies to the life changing power of Jesus Christ. Love
The night before his crucifixion Jesus told his disciples in John 13:35 that everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. Love for God and one another is the defining characteristic of the fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. In a biblical community people express their love for Christ by caring for one another. The New Testament is full of "one another" passages that encourage us to greet one another, be kind to one another, forgive one another, encourage one another, build up one another, submit to one another, and pray for one another. All these are ways that people express the love of Christ in a biblical community. Humility and brokenness are essential qualities necessary to becoming a better lover of God and of one another. The more believers grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ the more they are amazed by the depth of his love and grace. When conflicts arise in a biblical community believers move towards one another quickly with the goal of giving and receiving forgiveness and being reconciled to one another. Servanthood
Closely linked with the value of love is the importance of servanthood. Jesus modeled the value of serving one another when he knelt down and washed the feet of his disciples. Afterwards he said in John 13:14, Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. In a biblical community people look for ways to serve one another. There are always “dirty feet” to be washed. Servants recognize that no act of service is too small or insignificant if it is done to honor Jesus Christ. Servanthood pleases Christ, builds up those we serve, and strengthens our own relationship with God. A biblical community also recognizes that God has made each of us different. Every believer has a unique combination of gifts, talents, and resources. When our ministry reflects the person that God made us to be we find ourselves especially fruitful and fulfilled in God’s service. outreach
Before he ascended to heaven, Jesus gave the church a mission. In Matthew 28:19-20 he said,
In a biblical community believers take the initiative to reach out to others with the love and good news of Jesus Christ. The most effective witness for Christ takes place in the context of personal relationships. In those relationships the reality of Christ can be seen in our lives. Believers in a biblical community build friendships with those who are seeking meaning and purpose in life. As those friendships grow, opportunities will arise to share the life changing power of Jesus Christ. Believers also work together as a team to reach others for Christ, recognizing that often people are first drawn to a person, then to the community, and finally to Christ.
