EXPERIENCING COMMUNITY

What is community?

Valley View Community Church exists to be a biblical community that helps people become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ who make a difference in this world. The word community means “common life” and at its core is the fierce desire that every one of us has to find connection and closeness with other people.

This desire for community is deep within all of us because we were created in the image of a God who lives in community. God is one, but he exists in the three persons of the Trinity -- the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Our Triune God lives in perfect community and harmony with himself. All three persons of the Godhead love each other, serve each other, and honor each other.

God’s desire is that one day we would be part of this wonderful community that he enjoys and we will be if we trust in Jesus. Jesus said in John 14:2-3, In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

God created us in his image and likeness with this longing for community. In Genesis 2:18 God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. We were not meant to live isolated, disconnected lives. Instead, we were created to enjoy rich and fulfilling relationships with others.

Our need for community with people and with the God who made us is to the human spirit what food, air, and water are to the human body. Community sums up in one word what God is up to in the universe.

Jesus modeled the importance of community when he began his earthly ministry by surrounding himself with twelve disciples. His purpose was to be with them, teach them, and send them out to serve others.

The very first church, described in Acts 2, was devoted to community. From the beginning the church met together in large group settings for worship and teaching and in smaller communities to encourage and care for one another.

A powerful component of community is authenticity. Being real with one another is essential to developing genuine, meaningful relationships. Appropriate levels of self-disclosure and confession are necessary to experience deeper levels of community. The goal of our community with God and one another is to become more like Jesus Christ.

HOW DOES COMMUNITY HAPPEN?

The miracle of community is that it happens in all sorts of ways. At Valley View, community expresses itself in a variety of forms from gathering together to play soccer, meeting with a friend over a meal, working shoulder to shoulder on a Habitat for Humanity project, enjoying small group Bible studies and times of encouragement, meeting socially in a 4 x 4, participating in the Alpha Course, or serving on a ministry team...just to name a few.

It’s impossible to put a formula on community or standardize it for everyone. Relationships cannot be programmed. Instead, environments are continually being provided within the Valley View community where people can get to know each other and begin to build meaningful, trusting relationships.

Our desire is that everyone at Valley View be connected in community at some level. We were never meant to walk alone in our journey with Jesus. We were all meant to walk together in community with others in the body of Christ.

HOW DO I GET CONNECTED?

Opportunities for experiencing community are continually being offered at Valley View. If you need help getting connected you can often find them listed in our Events and Opportunities each week.
