WHAT IS BAPTISM?

The word baptism simply means "to dip or immerse." Baptism is an outward expression of your personal faith in Jesus Christ. The act of baptism does not make you a follower of Jesus. Instead, it is a powerful symbol that you are a follower of Jesus Christ. Just as a wedding ring symbolizes a married couple's commitment to one another, so baptism symbolizes your commitment to Jesus Christ.

WHY BE BAPTIZED?

As Christ followers we practice baptism for three primary reasons. First, because Jesus Christ commanded us to be baptized. Just before returning to heaven he left us this command in Matthew 28:19,

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Second, because the early church practiced baptism. Throughout the New Testament we have numerous examples of Christ followers being baptized. One such passage is Acts 2:41,

Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Third, because baptism symbolizes our identification with Jesus. Being immersed in water and then brought out again is a beautiful picture of what Jesus accomplished for us in his death, burial, and resurrection. Romans 6:4 describes this picture,

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

It is important to note that none of these passages mandate how much water should be used in baptism. The value of baptism is not found in the method or the mode, but in the public expression of our faith in Jesus Christ and our commitment to follow him.

WHO CAN BE BAPTIZED?

Baptism is for followers of Jesus Christ. It is for all those who believe that Jesus is Lord, the Son of the living God. As God's Son, Jesus died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose again. When we put our faith in Christ alone our sins are forgiven, we enter into God's kingdom, and we receive God's Holy Spirit. Baptism symbolizes the ending of our old life and the beginning of our new life in Christ.

If you have come to that point in your spiritual journey, then you are ready to be baptized. Just as a bride and groom tell of their love for one another through the symbol of rings, you can show the world through baptism that you are united with Christ.

Baptism is not a sign that you have arrived at spiritual maturity. Instead, it is a sign that you are ready to follow Jesus Christ just like the prison guard in Acts 16:30-33 who was baptized the very same night he came to faith.

He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household." Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized.

WHAT ABOUT INFANT BAPTISM?

While recognizing that some other church traditions practice infant baptism, Valley View Community Church understands the Bible to teach that baptism is for Christ followers. You may be thinking, "I was baptized as a baby--what do I do now? Was that a true baptism?"

In the New Testament we see parents bringing their children to Jesus. He held them and prayed for them and told us to welcome them. In fact, he said that we must become like little children to enter into his kingdom. But he did not baptize them nor did he tell anyone else to baptize them. So, in keeping with Scripture, we encourage children to wait until they have made their own decision to follow Christ and can clearly explain the significance of baptism before being baptized.

If you were baptized as an infant, then your baptism as a believing adult can be a wonderful way to fulfill the wishes of your parents who committed you to the Lord as a baby.

WHAT'S THE NEXT STEP?

To help prepare for your baptism, we ask that you write a paragraph or two describing your experience with Jesus Christ. When writing about your spiritual journey, do your best to focus on these points:

  1. What was your life like before you put your faith in Christ?
  2. Describe how and when you decided to trust Christ.
  3. What difference has following Jesus made in your life?
